This surface is somewhat "thirsty" in that it soaks up the oil in the paint to the point of leaving a matt surface. When this piece was varnished, it had a softer look compared with the other aspen paintings done on metals and other smooth surfaces. At the same time, the wood lends the painting a softer, warmer feeling.
