The smooth white surface allowed for a subtlety in the horizontal treatment of the snow compared to the vertical structure of the trees. The trees are painted with thin washes of oil paint to depict a leaner, quiet atmosphere or waiting. The wind and cold were a factor in the painting of this one – both the landscape and the painter hoping for Spring!
